The Lost Art of Listening Upwards

We often talk about leaders who inspire, managers who communicate, and mentors who guide. But we rarely talk about leaders who truly listen.

In many organizations, listening moves only in one direction. Employees listen to leaders. Teams listen to managers. But the strongest cultures are built when listening also moves upward, when leaders open space to hear what their teams genuinely think, feel, and need.

Listening upward is not about collecting feedback forms or running pulse surveys. It is about creating emotional permission, a climate where people feel safe to speak truth to power, and leaders are open enough to receive it without defence.

When leaders truly listen upward, they uncover not just new ideas but also early signals of disengagement, fatigue, or untapped potential. It transforms leadership from a position of control into a relationship of connection.

Maybe it is time we reimagined leadership, not as the voice everyone follows, but as the ear everyone trusts.
